Security forces in Assiut Governorate received a report stating that two people died after being crushed by sand in a hole while excavating for antiquities on a farm in the Manqabad area in the western desert hinterland of Assiut.
Security forces immediately responded to the reported location, and upon inspection, a 30-meter-deep hole was found inside the farm owned by the first defendant. Investigations revealed that a group of people were illegally digging and excavating for antiquities when the sand collapsed on two of them, leading to their immediate death.
Rescue forces were called in and succeeded in recovering the two bodies and transporting them to the Assiut Hospital morgue. It was found that they belonged to the farm owner, Ayman Fathy Salem, and another man named Fathy Abdel Azim Khaled, also known as "Fathy Al-Arabi."
Investigations also revealed the involvement of other individuals in the excavation and prospecting operation. Security forces arrested two of them, and they are being referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation.
The Public Prosecution ordered the two bodies to be examined by forensic medicine to determine the cause of death. It also tasked the technical office with examining the mobile phone of the first suspect, in preparation for arresting and bringing in the remaining members of the gang from various governorates. It also requested a full investigation into the incident.
